FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Two Meredith College Avenging Angels earned USA South weekly honors as announced Monday from the league office. Lacrosse attack Jennifer Halvorson earned her first weekly nod as the Player of the Week, and softball's Myah Morse collected her first Rookie Pitcher of the Week selection.
Halvorson led the lacrosse Avenging Angels in a 3-0 week with wins over the USA South's Methodist last Tuesday and a pair of non-conference opponents in Scranton and Southwestern (Texas) through the weekend. She totaled 13 points on 12 goals, one assist, adding two groundballs on the week.
Halvorson scored all four of her goals in the second half to help hold off the Monarchs 15-7. In Friday's 13-11 win over a tough Scranton Royals squad, she stepped up for the Angels with a match-high six goals, including the final point on the match to put away the visitors. In a 21-5 rout over the Pirates, Halvorson delivered a pair of unassisted goals.
Softball's freshman pitcher Morse earned a 3-0 record in three appearances with two complete-game starts during last week's USA South action. She tossed 16.1 innings for an ERA of 0.86 allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on nine hits with 13 walks and 11 strikeouts.
In a 6-1 win over Methodist, Morse allowed just two hits in 29 batters with one unearned run and four walks striking out three. In a 6-5, eight-inning victory at Maryville, she assumed the pitching duties in the sixth inning with the game even at four to close out for the win. Morse capped off the day with her fourth career win allowing five hits with a pair of earned runs with seven walks and six strikeouts to finish off the sweep over the Scots.
