Softball Swats Hornets, Sweep Shenandoah
Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith (18-10, 8-4 USA South)
softball team swept the visiting Shenandoah Hornets (12-9-1, 4-4)
winning game one in extra innings 4-3 and game two 5-0.
Game 1 - Meredith 4,
Shenandoah 3 - 9 innings - Shenandoah scored first in the
top of the first on a throwing error that allowed Renoula Jones to
score. The Avenging Angels scored one of their own in the bottom
second as Kirstin Morris scored on a wild pitch.
A 1-1 tied game went into the eighth as both teams had runners
placed on second base for extra innings. Both teams squeezed out
two runs and pushed a 3-3 game into the ninth.
Meredith's Lauriel Lebeau come into the game in relief in the top
of the ninth and held the Hornets scoreless. Meredith's Kayla
Walker was placed on second base to start the inning. Kirstin
Morris hit a single bunt moving Walker to third and taking second
on a stolen base. Brittney Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to center
field to score Walker and give the Angels the 4-3 extra inning win.
Lebeau took the relief appearance win.
Game 2: Meredith 5,
Shenandoah 0: The game was a pitcher's duel until the bottom
of the 4th inning when Guss Crist hit a solo bomb to center field
to give Meredith the 1-0 lead.
The Avenging Angels added a second run in the fifth as Sara
Cranford scored on an RBI-single from Morris.
The bottom of the sixth saw Meredith add three more runs. Crist
started it off with a walk and Arielle Stout hit a double to move
the runners to second and third. Val Sherrer hit a triple down the
left field line to score two runs. Cranford hit a sacrifice fly to
center field to score Sherrer.
Stout pitched a complete game one-hitter striking out 12 and moved
her record to 4-2.
Meredith next hosts Christopher Newport on Saturday at noon.
