Basketball Gets By Pesky Hornets, 71-69
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith basketball team completed a USA South weekend with a match up against Shenandoah University on Sunday. Meredith overtook the Hornets with the 71-69 victory.
The Hornets (5-9, 2-5 USA South) started the game on an 8-0 run until Bryana Holmes started the scoring for Meredith with a three-pointer from the corner. Meredith (4-9, 2-5) continued to chip away and were able to get the gap as close to two but were never able to take the lead. Shenandoah finished with a half time advantage of five points at 36-31.
The second half saw Shenandoah push their lead early to 15 points at the start of the half. Meredith chipped away at the lead until Keyanka Bailey took a fast break lay up to tie the game up at 53-all with six minutes left to play. Megan Rahn sunk two free throws to take the lead at 58-57 with four minutes left. The game remained back and forth and with the game tied at 69-all until Rahn is fouled with 4.7 seconds and connects on both to give Meredith the 71-69 lead. Shenandoah's last second attempt fell short and the Avenging Angels took the win.
Meredith was led by a two-headed attack of Holmes with 18 points and Rahn with 16. Bailey pulled down nine rebounds to go with nine points. Shenandoah was led by Nicole Gilbertson who had a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds.
Meredith next travels across town to Peace College to play their USA South rival. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
