SALEM, Va. -- The Meredith College basketball team suffered a tough 88-39 loss Wednesday evening to the host Roanoke Maroons in the second of a nine-game road series. Jessi Hayes led the Angels with 10 points, and Amy Rhoney tallied as many rebounds.
With single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters, the Avenging Angels never really challenged the Maroons, who led 40-14 at the half.
Rookie Maddie Gladwell opened the fourth period with a jump shot and the freshmen continued to boost Meredith's offense throughout the frame. Hannah Scurlock dropped in a free throw, and Janah Hassell followed with a quick jumper during the Angels' next possession. Gladwell drained a three pointer as Meredith continued to battle down the stretch.
Roanoke's Allison Livengood led an efficient Roanoke offense who shot 52 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from behind the arc to finish off the Angels for good.
Rhoney's double-digit rebounds led the game, but the Angels struggled to control the basketball on the other end. Gladwell finished with nine points, and Meghan Pleasants recorded seven points with four boards.
After playing three games in four days, the Avenging Angels will enjoy a much deserved week off before traveling to Lynchburg College December 7. Follow the live action HERE.
