Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith soccer team welcomed the University of Rutgers-Newark to campus on Sunday for their finale in the Meredith College Classic. The Avenging Angels took down the Scarlet Raiders in a 2-1 defensive battle.
Meredith struck first at the 13:54 mark as Rachel Didier scored on an assist from Carrie Talbert. Rutgers-Newark tied things up at the 23:22 mark, as Liana Abrea scored the unassisted goal. Abreu's goal ties her for the Rutgers-Newark career goals mark with 34. The teams went into the half deadlocked at 1-1.
Meredith's Jessie Davis scored the game winning unassisted goal at the 55:45 mark. Meredith would continue with a tight defense and gain the 2-1 win. Davis was an integral part of the Avenging Angels offense on the weekend, gaining three goals in two games.
Meredith held the 6-0 advantage on corner kicks and out shot Rutgers 22-8.
Meredith next heads to the Catholic University DC Classic in Washington, D.C. on September 10 at 2 p.m. to face Bridgewater College.
