Volleyball Gains Fifth Win in a Row, Drop Wasps and Spirits
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith volleyball team (6-2) hosted a non-conference quad match on Saturday. In the opener Meredith swept Salem 3-0 and took down Emory and Henry 3-1 in the night cap. Meredith was the only undefeated team on the day with Salem, Methodist and Emory and Henry all gaining losses. With the win, Meredith is on a five game winning streak.
Meredith 3, Salem 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-22) - Meredith took the first two sets easily 25-11 and 25-15, then had a come from behind victory in the third 25-22 to sweep the Spirits.
Meredith was led by Cori Spade with 15 kills and eight digs. Molly Markley put down 13 kills and two blocks. Clarke Glendenning led on assists with 19 and MaryBeth Finegan had 15 digs. Meredith out hit Salem .245 to .057 and had three blocks compared to one by Salem.
Meredith 3, Emory and Henry 1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 25-19) - The first game saw Meredith exchange the lead several times. The Avenging Angels were last tied at 12-all and took the momentum and the set. The second set went to the Wasps 25-21 in an intense battle after seven lead changes and 16 ties. In the third, it was a close match until Meredith went on a run at 14-all to secure the set 25-18. In the fourth, Meredith fell behind early and looked like it was going to five, but the Avenging Angels slammed the door on the Wasps and won it 25-19.
The Avenging Angels were led by Spade with 17 kills and six digs. Markley had 16 kills and three blocks, while Anna Hayes added 11 kills and six digs. Glendenning once again led in assists with 23 while Emily Anderson had 18 digs.
Meredith next travels to N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday to open USA South Conference play. Game time is 7 p.m.
