RALEIGH, N.C. -- Junior forward Kimberly Schuh scored 36 points to lead the Meredith College basketball team to a 79-77 victory over the Shaw Bears Saturday afternoon. She reached 1000 career points with the first bucket of the game.
Shaw held a one-point lead at the end of the first period, but Madison Gladwell drained a three pointer in the opening seconds of the second frame from the hands of Zaina Hook to put MCBB back in front. The Bears hit a pair of shots to return the lead to the hosts, but Kate Perko netted a jumper to even the score again at 25. Schuh dropped in a pair of free throws, and a Perko tip-in kept the Angels in the lead. MCBB scored the last six points of the period to hold a 37-30 advantage at the break.
The Bears chipped away at Meredith's largest 12-point third quarter lead to even the score at 77 with seconds remaining in regulation. Head Coach LaQuanda Quick used a timeout to set up a play, but Gladwell missed her three-point attempt. Freshman Lindsay Bell grabbed the offensive board, and scored the winning bucket on a putback to edge the Angels into the lead for the win.
Perko finished with 20 points, adding 12 rebounds, and Bell scored 18 with four blocks, three boards. Schuh added six rebounds, and hit 14-of-17 from the stripe en route to her game high total. Hook finished with five assists, three steals, and Gladwell dished out four assists, five rebounds with three points.
Ariana Fleming led the Bears with 22 points, adding seven rebounds.
With a 2-2 overall record MCBB welcomes Christopher Newport to Raleigh Saturday, Nov. 23, in the first of a pair of home contests before Thanksgiving. The Captains received 19 votes in the WBCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
