Under the lights

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The visiting Salem Spirits downed Meredith College 3-0 in Tuesday night's USA South women's soccer action.

Salem's Ellie Montes slipped in the first goal of the night inches from the box after an impressive save from Miranda Lutz. She launched five more at the net before exiting the field late in the second half. Martha Santos scored the second off a corner kick from Alyssa Denkovich late in the first period and secured the win for good in the 64th minute with an assist from Courtney Chaplin.

Lutz led a tenacious Avenging Angels defense with 10 saves on the night, and her teammates assisted with five more. Annah Bishop and Kaelin Sanderford managed the wings, and Celvy Kofsky entered the match 18 minutes into regulation to support the effort.

Morgan Thomas and Amelie Gilles pushed the ball upfield to create opportunities for the Avenging Angels, and rookie McKenzie Jackson threatened the net on more than one occasion late late in the match.

Salem's Hannah Wagner earned the win with one save in the first 70 minutes of the match, and Jordan Tomberlin finished off the game with one of her own.

The Avenging Angels host Pfeiffer University Saturday in a 2 p.m. USA South pairing. Alumnae-athletes may still register for Saturday's event HERE.
