Soccer for the Win

Hunter Straub on the ball

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Meredith College soccer Angels recorded their first USA South Conference victory with a 1-0 finish over the Averett Cougars Friday afternoon.

Late in the second half, Madison Gladwell passed to Hannah Elvington, Hunter Straub picked up the deflection, and slipped past AU's goalie to score the game winning and only point of the match.

The Avenging Angels controlled the ball throughout the match with 20 shots compared to just four from the Cougars. And Emily Haynes stopped the one shot on goal from the hosts in the 83rd minute of the match to protect Meredith's win.

Lillian Fox led the Avenging Angels with three shots, including two attempts early in the action, and Olivia Mason returned to the lineup to record two on the day.

Averett's Morgan Dill's tallied seven stops in goal for the hosts in her 13th loss on the day.

After a much deserved fall recess, the soccer Angels return to their home pitch next Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. USA South pairing.
