RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College soccer team picked up their second consecutive win Wednesday night with a 2-1 finish over the visiting Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan. Katie Quinn and Morgan Thomas paired up to score both goals in the win.
After a shift from her usual spot on the defensive line, Quinn created both scoring opportunities for the Avenging Angels from the wing. She dribbled down the right side of the field in the first half and served up Thomas for a goal in the 28th minute of the match.
The Bishops countered quickly with a goal from Cydney Nichols less than two minutes later off a pass from Emily Puentes to even the score through the remainder of the half.
But early in the second period, Quinn found Thomas again to give the Avenging Angels a 2-1 advantage. Meredith managed to fend off five attempts from N.C. Wesleyan during the stanza, including a close attempt from Nichols that flew high over the goal.
Both teams battled for control throughout the 90 minutes of play with a combined 28 attempts at the net. Both goalie's worked hard in the box with eight saves apiece. Meredith's rookie keeper Emily Haynes earned her second career win, and Alicia Jacobs recorded her eighth loss for Wesleyan.
The Avenging Angels head north this weekend for a USA South match at Mary Baldwin before facing off with rival William Peace next week at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
