RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College dropped Wednesday's USA South Conference match 9-0 to the visiting Methodist Monarchs. A second non-conference contest finished 5-4 in favor of the Avenging Angels.
All but one singles pairing and one doubles match featured at least one game claimed by the Angels. Aly Henneberry and Brittney Brown captured two points on court one, and both Avenging Angels fought their singles opponents for a combined eight games at no. 1 and no. 2. Alexandra Cheney garnered three games from her Monarch opponent Taylor Jackson. With partner Emily Wilkinson the pair recorded one game on court two in doubles play versus Ashton Walker and Abby Caddick.
In the second match of today's doubleheader, the head coaches altered the format to an eight-game proset for both doubles and singles, and Head Monarch Coach John Blackburn changed his lineup to pair more competitively with the Avenging Angels.
Henneberry and Brown defeated MU's Allison Himes and Sydni Lewis on court one, and Cheney and Wilkinson finished off Catherine Smith and Jessica Tucker 8-6 to give the Angels a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The bottom three singles courts with Cheney, Wilkinson, and Logan King finished with a trio of non-league wins to give Meredith the 5-4 overall match win.
Meredith will face off with the William Peace Pacers Thursday at 5 p.m., instead of the previously scheduled Friday morning time. The match will be played at the City of Raleigh's Lions Park.
