RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College volleyball's standout defender Lauren Phillips garnered the 2019 USA South Libero of the Year honor and joined two teammates as All-Conference honorees. Caroline Corey garnered her fourth selection to the All-USA South first team, and both were joined by Cathy Delano on the All-East first team. Lauren Grodi represented MCVB as the All-Sportsmanship selection.
Phillips ranks second among USA South players with 577 digs and 5.39 digs per set thus far this season. Against conference opponents this fall, Phillips led the League with 298 digs while her 79 assists were the high among liberos. She posted a career-high 38 digs back in August and surpassed 1000 career digs on October 22. Phillips garnered four conference weekly honors this fall and joins MaryBeth Finegan, '13, as just the second Avenging Angel to earn LOY.
Corey ranks in the USA South's top-10 this season with 309 kills and a 2.89 hitting percentage. She also collected 195 digs, recorded 42 total blocks, and landed eight service winners. Corey ranks second all-time at Meredith with 1311 career kills and in the top-10 with 111 block assists and 139 total career blocks. With five double-doubles this season and 26 over her four-year career, Corey ranks as one of MCVB's top overall players and one of the most decorated Avenging Angels.
A two-time All-East honoree, Delano ranks fifth in the USA South with 21 block solos, averaging .74 blocks per set this fall, and sits ninth with 78 total stuffs. Her .286 hitting percentage on 159 kills in 385 attempts ranks fifth as well.
Grodi sits in 15th in the league with 470 assists this season and ranks seventh all-time at Meredith with 771 over her four years with MCVB. She matched last year's season total with 22 service aces and currently ranks eighth at Meredith averaging .84 per set.
The Avenging Angels advanced to Friday's 4 p.m. semifinal match versus the Maryville Scots hosted by Averett University in Danville, Va. The Cougars face off with Huntingdon at 6:30 p.m. with the winners slated to meet Saturday at 3 p.m. in the AU Grant Center.
