Joseph Garwood was named Director of Athletic Communications / Game Day Operations at Meredith College in May 2026.
Garwood arrives at Meredith with more than a decade of collegiate athletic communications experience across the Division I and Division III levels. Prior to joining Meredith, he served as Director of Athletic Communications at Piedmont University, where he oversaw communications operations for 22 intercollegiate athletic programs while managing event coverage, strategic communications, live statistics, digital content and game day operations.
In August 2025, Garwood was elevated to department head within the Piedmont athletic department, serving as a direct report to the athletic director while supervising full-time staff members, interns and more than 30 student workers. During his tenure, Piedmont Athletic Communications earned D3SIDA Region 6 Staff of the Year honors in 2025.
Before his time at Piedmont, Garwood held athletic communications positions at Wake Forest University and Wofford College. Throughout his career, he has served as the primary media contact for numerous collegiate athletic programs, provided live broadcast commentary, managed social media strategy and assisted with NCAA postseason events.
Garwood has also been recognized for his creativity and innovation in digital storytelling, including conceptualizing a nationally shared feature utilizing SIDEARM Narrator that was amplified by the NCAA.
A native of North Carolina, Garwood earned his Bachelor of Science degree in History from Appalachian State University in 2015.
