Hendricks Leads Meredith to 3-2 Win over Rivals

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Emily Hendricks scored four of Meredith College volleyball's last nine points to edge the host William Peace Pacers in Tuesday's USA South contest. The 3-2 (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 17-25, 15-12) victory maintains Meredith's second place in North division standings with just two matches remaining in regular season play and marks the seventh consecutive win over Peace.

With a 2-0 Avenging Angels advantage, the Pacers took the lead for the first time on a 12-2 run in the third frame. The teams battled through the next nine points to remain tied at 19 when William Peace scored three consecutive to lead 22-19.

Hendricks ended the run and followed with a stuff alongside Alex Hafliger. Leading Pacer Nicole Phillips interrupted the series before Hafliger landed a winner from the middle and partnered up with Hendricks once more. But Peace managed to slip back in front to claim the set.

The Angels would not find a rhythm throughout the fourth as William Peace forced a deciding game. Peace maintained the momentum to score the first four points in the fifith frame before Meredith began to chip away at the deficit.

Hafliger, Karlie Long, and Elizabeth Pattison notched a trio of winners, and WPU gave away two more on a pair of mishandled plays to pull the Avenging Angels to within one at 7-6. With fans from both sides off their seats, the Pacers scored two quick points to remain in front by three.

But Hendricks erupted from the outside and crushed a pair of kills down the line to give MCVB a lift to tie the set at nine. Jessica Goodwin held on to the serve as the Angels maintained the pressure. The teams traded points on the next six plays leaving Meredith with match point, and Hannah Blaylock dished out her 48th assist to finish off the hosts.

Hendricks tallied 13 kills with a pair of blocks. Long added 13 kills with 12 digs and three service aces, and Jasmine Auguinaldo finished with 10 kills, four digs. Hafliger added nine winners from the middle, and led Meredith with three blocks, while Emery McGee recorded 21 digs in the win.

William Peace out-blocked Meredith 25-to-10 with Merica Ivey and Tempestt Frazier leading with six apiece. Carson Williams notched a match-high 23 digs, and Maddie Irvin added 11.

Meredith hosts a USA South Play Day on Halloween to close out the regular season. The Angels pair up with the Southern division leader Covenant at 10 a.m. and cap off the day versus Maryville. Both Scots squads face off with Methodist beginning at Noon. Saturday's event marks MCVB's official Dig Pink match.
