Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- The visiting Mary Washington Eagles delivered a 21-11 loss to Meredith College lacrosse Wednesday afternoon. Ranked 18th nationally among NCAA Division III programs, UMW remained undefeated at 5-0, and the Avenging Angels fell to 3-1 heading into spring break.
The Eagles outpaced Meredith with 37 attempts to the Angels' 19, but Meredith scored the most points on the seasoned Eagles than any other opponent thus far this spring. UMW scored two early, but two-time USA South Rookie of the Week Julie Capretti netted a free position attempt to put MC Lax on the board at 24:59.
After a 6-1 Eagles run, Meredith responded with back-to-back goals to trim the deficit to just four with 38 ticks remaining in the period. The Angels controlled the next draw control but mishandled the ball to give Eagle Emily Mott the final point of the half.
Carlee Joseph and Katie Burnet paired up to start the second period, but UMW quickly took control of the match scoring seven of the next nine to hold a 16-7 lead.
But the tenacious Meredith lacrosse Angels battled back with four consecutive goals to force the Eagles to call for a break in the action.
The timeout shifted the momentum back in favor of the Eagles as UMW finished out the match on a 5-0 rally for the win.
Katie Sills earned her first loss with eight stops, and UMW's starting keeper Hanna Ashby earned her fifth win on the season.
Burnet led the Angels with four goals and one assist, and Victoria Doyle notched a match-high eight draw controls to go along with five groundballs, four caused turnovers, and three total points.
The Avenging Angels will spend the early part of spring break in Puerto Rico pairing first with the Roanoke Maroons Sunday night, followed by a 10:30 a.m. match Tuesday versus SUNY Oneonta. MC Lax returns to Raleigh on the 12th to face off with Greensboro Saturday and the defending regular season champion Piedmont Lions Sunday at 1 p.m.
