CNU Battles Back to Edge MC Lax 16-15

Box Score

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The host Christopher Newport Captains compiled a 10-4 second half performance to edge Meredith College lacrosse 16-15 Saturday afternoon. Carlee Joseph led the Avenging Angels with four goals, and Holly Hite gathered a game-high 10 draw controls.

The Captains scored first, but Meredith's scoring leaders in Joseph, Hite, and Julie Capretti each netted a point to place the Angels out front at 25:39. An unforced Meredith turnover gave Sarah Culver a chance at a free position attempt, and she pulled CNU back to within one on the score.

Rookies Lilia Cruz and Hanna Anderson tallied two goals apiece along with a second from Joseph to extend the Angels' lead to six with 17 minutes left in the period. Both teams added three more goals to leave MC Lax with a five-point lead heading into the break.

But three quick goals from Culver and Colleen Bourgal in the first minute of the second half led the Captains on a 5-0 run to even the match at 22:24. Meredith responded with back-to-back goals from Capretti and a third from Anderson to spread the gap once more. The teams exchanged the next points leaving the Angels with a three-point advantage with just under 12 to play. But the Captains scored four unanswered goals down the stretch to steal the home field victory.

Capretti, Anderson, and Cruz finished with three goals apiece, and Hite added two points, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Sarah Arbes collected three draw controls, four ground balls, and forced a pair of Captain turnovers.

Culver led the way with six goals, adding eight draw controls for CNU.

Sydney Hardee and Haley Whitfield split time in goal for the Avenging Angels for a combined 15 saves, and Kaitlyn Ready notched 13 stops to record her third win for the Captains.

Meredith picks back up with USA South Conference action Wednesday versus Methodist with the first of two consecutive home matches. Rival Piedmont College travels to Raleigh next weekend.
