Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College lacrosse opened the USA South season Saturday morning and made quick work of the visiting Averett University Cougars. Lilia Cruz led with six goals and Tori Witmer with eight points.
Briana Petrusa found Cruz on the opening play to give Meredith a quick 1-0 lead, and Maya Flake would add a second goal in the 27th minute before the ball made its way into AU's offensive zone. Adriana Perez drove in for an unassisted Cougar goal at 25:29 for what would be their only point on the day.
Nine Angels found the net for MC Lax with 17 assists, including five apiece from Witmer and Maya Flake. Arrianna May netted four, Jess Dowdy three, and Maya Blake scored three with as many assists.
Cruz topped all with 10 draw controls, three ground balls. Ansley Harris and Kamryn Muschette registered two caused turnovers each, while Blake, Cruz, May, Lauren Oliver, and Ali Schuh recorded one stop apiece.
Joy Deitrich started in goal for Meredith for the win, and Madeline Horrell subbed in at the break to record one save in the second half. Kaylee Joblon earned the loss for the Cougars.
