Field Hockey drops tight home game against Virginia Wesleyan

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith Field Hockey program hosted another talented ODAC opponent in Virginia Wesleyan University Wednesday night falling 2-0 in a tightly contested game at the Meredith Track & Field Complex.

The Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period before being held scoreless for the following two periods of action.

"We fought hard and we did everything but put the ball in the net," head coach Colleen Cassada said. "Penalty corners were the difference in the teams tonight. The Marlins scored off two and they held us to 1-2 shots on our 8. I can say though this was our best game by far."

Cassada was spot on as her Angels hung tough throughout the entire game. Virginia Wesleyan tacked on a second goal in the fourth with seven minutes to go which shut the door on the night.

Meredith tallied eight penalty corners to the Marlins 10 but just were not able to convert.

Freshman Charlotte Dyer led the attack with three shots. Defensively, senior MiRonda Swepson earned two defensive saves while junior Shae-Lynn Henderson earned 17 saves in goal.

The Angels are on the road this Saturday with a 4 p.m. start at Sweet Briar.
