Softball splits conference finale on Senior Day against N.C. Wesleyan

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith softball program spit their final USA South doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. The Angels took game one 5-2 and fell in extra innings 6-5 in game two.

The three seniors honored were Mia Staggs, Savannah Talley, and Sarah Manis. Graduate Student Hannah Weigle was also honored.

In game one, Meredith scored three runs in the third and two in the fourth to create a cushion at the end of the game. The Battling Bishops scored two in the sixth but the Angels fended them off for the game one victory.

Weigle only allowed four hits in her complete game victory in the circle while tacking on six strikeouts. Manis had two doubles and two RBIs at the plate while sophomore Lillie Davis added a two-RBI double. Staggs also had a two-hit game.

In game two, the offenses were more alive. Meredith scored two in the first and one in the second, leading 5-2 after four complete innings. A three-run fifth for N.C. Wesleyan tied the game which ended in the eighth after they crossed a run in the top of the inning and the Angels could not match it.

Manis had another two-hit game with an RBI while sophomore Avery Puryear added a two-RBI single. Davis tallied 10 strikeouts in the circle.

Meredith heads to No. 8 Christopher Newport University for their season finale with game one at 1 p.m.
