BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Meredith College soccer team closed out their 2025 campaign Saturday night in the first round of the USA South Conference Tournament, falling 2-0 to Southern Virginia University in a hard-fought road matchup.
Despite cold conditions and early offensive pressure from the Knights, Meredith's defense held strong throughout the opening half. Junior goalkeeper Samantha Woodfin anchored the Avenging Angels' back line with a standout performance, recording eight saves to keep the game scoreless heading into the break, while senior Ellie Heney applied pressure offensively with two shots on goal.
Southern Virginia broke through early in the second half, converting a through ball to take a 1-0 lead. The Avenging Angels continued to fight, keeping the Knights' offensive scoreless for the next 35 minutes. Meredith's defensive unit — led by Woodfin and a disciplined back line — kept the match within reach until the Knights added an insurance goal in the 87th minute.
Meredith concludes the 2025 season with pride, showing grit and determination against one of the top teams in the conference. The Avenging Angels showed development and determination throughout the year, building valuable experience for future seasons.
