Avenging Angels Rally for Reverse Sweep on Senior Day

Meredith Volleyball Defeats Brevard 3–2 to Close Regular Season in Dramatic Fashion

RALEIGH, N.C. — Meredith College Volleyball celebrated its four seniors — Lillie Davis, Katelyn Patterson, Ellie Ward, and Delaney Lowery — in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon, rallying from a two-set deficit to defeat Brevard College, 3–2. The Senior Day victory capped the regular season with grit and energy, as the Avenging Angels powered back for a reverse sweep inside Weatherspoon Gymnasium.

How It Happened

Set 1:
Meredith came out strong behind senior Katelyn Patterson, who set the tone by serving five straight points to open the match. The Avenging Angels built a commanding 19–11 lead midway through the set, but a late stretch of errors allowed Brevard to close the gap and eventually tie things at 21–21. The teams traded points in a tense finish before Brevard edged out the opener, 26–24.
Set 2:
Brevard carried that momentum into the second set, taking control early. Meredith's offense found rhythm through an aggressive attack led by Daven Brabble, but the Avenging Angels couldn't quite catch their full stride and dropped the set 25–20, putting the Tornados up 2–0 in the match.
Set 3:
Refusing to back down, Meredith came out swinging in the third set and never looked back. Sara Dees fueled the offense while Megan Murray anchored the defense with relentless play in the back row. The Avenging Angels maintained control throughout, taking the set 25–20 to extend the match.
Set 4:
Meredith's momentum only grew stronger. The Angels dominated the fourth set, tallying 13 kills and hitting an impressive .370 as a team. The serving game was on fire, with Maddie Aveline delivering three aces and Brabble adding two. Meredith cruised to a 25–15 win to force a decisive fifth set.
Set 5:
With the match tied 2–2, Meredith carried its energy into the final set. Freshman Caroline Prease opened with a 4–0 service run, but Brevard responded to take an 8–7 edge. The Angels answered immediately, tying it at 8–8, and then surged ahead behind powerful swings from Brabble and Caitlyn Russell, plus two more aces from Aveline. Meredith sealed the comeback with a 15–10 win to complete the reverse sweep.

Key Performances

  • Caitlyn Russell led the offense with 19 kills, hitting .400, and added 10 digs for a double-double.
