Five Home Runs Lift Denison Past Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. | In a thrilling game, Denison University showcased their offensive power, especially in a dominant fifth inning, to secure a 12-3 victory over Meredith College at the Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic on Friday.

Meredith's strong fourth inning rally, fueled by two clutch doubles, tied the game at three. Tess Spangenburg led the charge with an RBI double to center field, bringing in Salem Zeka and advancing Ashbee Standridge to third. The rally continued when Kaydon Roberson followed with a double of her own. She roped one to left center, scoring Spangenburg and Standridge. This brought the game even, with both teams poised to break away and take the lead in the fifth.

Denison quickly responded and took control in the next frame. The fifth inning was nothing short of a fireworks show, as Denison's lineup came alive with four home runs, putting them ahead for good.
First, Annabelle Calderon blasted a solo home run to give Denison a 4-3 lead. After a walk, Jacqui Abogado sent a two-run homer to center field, followed by another solo shot from Brooke Surbaugh. Giavanna Gangi capped off the power surge with a solo home run, giving Denison a commanding 8-3 lead.

Denison wasn't done yet. In the top of the sixth, Abogado hit yet another homer—this time a grand slam to left center—to stretch the lead to 12-3, effectively putting the game out of reach for Meredith.

Denison's pitching staff also played a key role, with Brooke Surbaugh picking up the win after throwing 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out four Angels. Madilyn Moffitt came in relief, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings.

Meredith's pitching staff struggled to contain Denison's offense, with starter Kaylee Manning taking the loss after allowing 6 earned runs in 4 innings. Manning was dealing through the first three innings and recorded six strikeouts. Emily Dorsey, Rhyleigh Horne, and Jammie Wrenn followed but couldn't stop the offensive barrage.

Game Highlights:
  • Tess Spangenburg: A standout for Meredith, she had an RBI double in the fourth inning, driving in a crucial run to keep the game close.
  • Kaydon Roberson: Followed with a two-RBI double, which tied the game.
  • Denison's Power Surge: The big story of the day was Denison's four home runs in the fifth inning, including a solo shot from Calderon, two-run blast from Abogado, solo from Surbaugh, and another solo shot from Gangi.
