ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. | Meredith College Softball battled hard, but fell 11-1 and 4-1 in Saturday's conference doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan.
Game One:
Meredith struck first in the top of the first inning.
Ashbee Standridge reached base and came around to score on a clutch RBI single up the middle from
Carson Griffith. The Angels carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
N.C. Wesleyan responded with an eight-run surge in the bottom half of the first, capitalizing on a combination of timely hits and Meredith miscues. Meredith starter
Rhyleigh Horne was charged with the loss.
Despite the early deficit, the Angels received solid relief pitching from
Leila Slater and
Grayson Cowart, who combined to throw the remaining 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Griffith led the Angels at the plate, going 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Senior
Gracie Massengale added a hit in a pinch-hit appearance. Meredith finished with four hits on the day.
Game Two:
After four scoreless innings marked by quality defense and steady pitching on both sides, the Battling Bishops broke through in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Reagan Holloman to take a 1–0 lead. Meredith answered right back in the sixth when Standridge drove in
Mia Staggs with a ground out, tying the game at 1–1.
However, N.C. Wesleyan responded in their half of the sixth, capitalizing on a Meredith error and a pair of timely hits. Riley Bryant's RBI single reclaimed the lead, and shortstop Abby Lowry followed with a two-run home run to extend the margin to 4–1.
Dorsey (1–2) went the distance in the circle for Meredith, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing just six hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts. She kept the Angels in the game through multiple jams, stranding seven N.C. Wesleyan baserunners.
At the plate, Meredith recorded six hits, led by Staggs' 2-for-4 performance and two-hit day from
Avery Puryear.
Morgan Knight and
Kaydon Roberson each added a hit, while the team played error-free until the sixth inning.
N.C. Wesleyan's Emma Humphrey (10–4) earned the complete-game win, striking out three and walking none while scattering six hits over seven innings.
