MISENHEIMER, N.C. | Meredith College saw its USA South Tournament run take a hit Friday afternoon, falling 8-0 in five innings to the top seed, Pfeiffer at Jack Ingram Field.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
The Avenging Angels were unable to break through offensively against a sharp Pfeiffer squad that combined strong pitching and timely hitting to control the contest. Meredith collected four hits on the day, but couldn't push a run across in the early stages.
Senior
Emilee Lewis, along with
Avery Puryear,
Mia Staggs, and
Sarah Manis, each recorded a hit for the Angels. Manis also laid down a sacrifice bunt in the second inning to try and spark the offense. Despite getting runners aboard in multiple innings, Meredith stranded four runners and couldn't capitalize.
Freshman
Kaylee Manning (7-9) started in the circle for Meredith and battled through 3.2 innings against a high-powered Falcons lineup, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits with five walks.
Emily Dorsey came on in relief to record the final out of the fourth.
Defensively, the Avenging Angels played error-free softball and stayed composed under pressure despite Pfeiffer's aggressive baserunning and a five-run outburst in the fourth.
Facing one of the top pitchers in the country, Meredith was held scoreless by Pfeiffer's Emma Bullin (26-4), who allowed just four hits and struck out four in a complete-game effort.
UP NEXT:
Meredith will look to bounce back in tomorrow's early morning (9:00 a.m.) elimination game against the eight seed, William Peace. The winner of that game moves on to face Pfeiffer in the Championship Game for the first bracket.
