Avenging Angels Earn First Season Opener Win in Program History

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Eastern Mennonite University - The Meredith College Field Hockey team traveled to Eastern Mennonite University to face off in a neutral site contest against new opponent, Cedar Crest College. The Angels made their presence known, notching the opening goal in the first period and effectively shutting out the Falcons before closing the contest 3-0.

How it Happened:
  • Meredith quickly took possession of the ball in the opening minutes and refused to give the Falcons an opportunity to put anything on the cage. Putting play after play up against the Cedar Crest defense, Sarah Click finally broke through with 14 seconds left in the period on a back post finish off a pass by Charlotte Dyer
  • The Angels defense, led by Natasha Elder and Sierra Grande, held strong in the second quarter, allowing no shots or corners from the Falcons over the duration of the first half. Meredith fired another three shots at the Cedar Crest defense but couldn't find the back of the cage before halftime.
  • The Falcons rallied in the third quarter, outshooting the Angels three to two. However, this didn't phase Charlotte Dyer, who managed to secure the Angels second goal of the game and give Meredith a further lead going into the closing period.
  • Meredith turned up the heat in the final 15 minutes of play, recording a game high 11 shots on cage. With pressure wearing down the Falcon defense, Maya Kirstein collected a pass to stroke from Charlotte Dyer to notch the third and final goal of the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
For the first time in program history, the Meredith Field Hockey team won their season opener. Freshman Sarah Click tallied her first career goal and freshman goalie Jasmin Solar earned her first shut out. Charlotte Dyer extends her lead as the top goal scorer in program history with 13 goals while Maya Kirstein follows close behind with 11. This is also the first game in program history where the Angels did not allow any shots or corners from their opponent in the whole
first half of play.
