RALEIGH, N.C. — After a rain delay pushed Saturday's action to Sunday, the Meredith College Avenging Angels returned to the field for a picture-perfect day of postseason softball in the USA South Conference Tournament. Facing elimination in a double-elimination format, the #2-seeded Angels needed two wins over #3 seed NC Wesleyan to advance—and delivered a gritty opening victory before falling in a hard-fought finale to close out a historic 2026 season.
Game 1: Meredith 3, NC Wesleyan 1
Behind a dominant performance in the circle and a timely offensive surge, Meredith kept its season alive with a 3-1 victory in the opening game of the day.
After a scoreless first inning, the Avenging Angels broke through in the second. With the bases loaded, senior Lillie Davis delivered the biggest swing of the game—a three-RBI double to right center that plated all three Meredith runs and gave the home team full control early.
Davis was just as strong in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just one unearned run on five hits and striking out six. She kept NC Wesleyan off balance throughout, shutting the door in the final innings to secure the win.
Meredith totaled seven hits in the contest, with Tess Spangenburg adding two and Laycie Eastwood and Morgan Knight each scoring runs to support the effort.
Game 2: NC Wesleyan 2, Meredith 1 (8 innings)
With a spot in the next round on the line, the two teams delivered a tightly contested battle that extended into extra innings.
Meredith struck first in the second inning when Ashbee Standridge launched a solo home run to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead. The advantage held deep into the game as Davis continued her strong weekend in the circle.
NC Wesleyan responded in the seventh to tie the game at 1-1, forcing extras. In the eighth inning, the Battling Bishops capitalized on an opportunity to push across the go-ahead run, while Meredith was unable to answer in the bottom half.
Davis went the distance once again, throwing all eight innings and allowing just two runs while scattering 11 hits in a resilient effort. Meredith recorded seven hits in the game, including a three-hit performance from Rhyleigh Horne.
