RALEIGH, N.C. – Meredith field hockey battled Tuesday afternoon, scoring three goals in a 7-3 loss against Roanoke in its home and season opener.
Roanoke opened the scoring five minutes into the contest and steadily built a 4-0 lead through the first half. The Avenging Angels responded with a goal in the closing seconds of the second quarter.
Megan Ingenito got Meredith on the board with 22 seconds remaining in the second quarter, finishing a pass from
Charlotte Dyer.
Roanoke added a goal early in the third quarter, but Meredith answered once again.
Sophia Frez scored her first career goal off an assist from Ingenito.
The Maroons added two more goals in the fourth. The Avenging Angels finished the game with a goal as Ingenito and Dyer connected once again in the closing moments.
Defensively, Meredith recorded 21 saves as a team.
Lyla Burdine and
Jasmin Solar combined for a strong effort in goal. Burdine made nine saves in the first half before Solar stopped 11 shots over the final 30 minutes.
Marissa Tilgner also recorded a defensive save.
Meredith finished with 12 shots, including seven on goal, while earning four penalty corners.
Up next, Meredith will host Goucher, set for this Sunday, Sept. 6 at 12 p.m.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Ingenito led the way with two goals and an assist for five points. She recorded three games with five or more points last season.
- Frez scored the first goal of her Meredith career and set a new career high with two points after recording one assist last season.
- Dyer tallied two assists for her fifth career game with two or more assists. She is now one assist shy of 20 for her collegiate career.
- Solar recorded 11 saves, one shy of her career high, despite playing only one half.
