Charlotte Dyer scored a pair of goals to lead Meredith Field Hockey past Goucher by a 5-3 margin on Sunday afternoon in Raleigh.
The Avenging Angels never trailed in the contest and held off a late rally from the Gophers to seal the victory.
Dyer scored two of Meredith's three second half goals, with her last being a crucial one, as it staved off the comeback attempt and put the Avenging Angels ahead by two in the final minutes.
Overall, MC controlled play most of the way, holding a 27-8 shot advantage, including a 20-5 edge in shots on goal.
Marissa Tilgner got the scoring started for Meredith, finding the back of the net in the 12th minute, putting away a scramble situation after a penalty corner and an assist from
Lydia Smith.
While the MC lead was short lived, the Angels quickly retook momentum, answering the Gophers' first goal with another of its own. This one came from
Sophia Frez, off an assist from
Megan Ingenito. After scoring her first career goal in the season opner on Tuesday, Frez has now scored in back-to-back contests.
Coming out of the halftime break with a 2-1 lead, the Avenging Angels began to take control early in the third quarter, as Ingenito and Dyer each scored their first of the game to extend the lead to 4-1.
Goucher did not go away quietly, however, answering with a pair of goals to put game pressure on Meredith, which responded with Dyer's 56th minute goal to effectively seal the win.
Up next, the Avenging Angels will be away from competition until next Sunday, Sept. 13 when they host Sewanee at 12 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- With its lead cut to one, Dyer took a feed from
Maya Kirstein and converted the chance to put MC up 5-3 in the final minutes.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Dyer's two goal performance marks her fourth multi-goal game of her career, as she has now had at least one in each season.
- Ingenito delivered her second strong showing in a row, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists, after scoring twice with one assist during Tuesday's season opener.
