Ward's Brace Pushes Meredith to 3-0 Triumph Over Huntingdon

DEMOREST, Ga. - Rachel Ward scored a pair of second half goals as Meredith soccer used a second half offensive explosion to take down Huntingdon, 3-0, on a rainy Friday night in Demorest, Georgia.

Taking a scoreless game into the break, the Avenging Angels saw the offensive floodgates open at the same time as the skies, scoring three times in the second half to put away the Hawks.

The win marked the first at Meredith for new Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team," said Barroqueiro. "Tonight was the culmination of a ton of hard work and belief in the process. These girls are staying the course and I'm glad we could get the weekend started on the right foot."

The first half was more of a defensive battle as the two sides wrestled for any advantage.

Then, early in the second half, Ward struck for her first goal of the game, dribbling around the keeper to put away her first goal of the season and also her first since her freshman season of 2023. However, the Fuquay-Varina native did not stop there, striking again to double Meredith's lead less than 20 minutes later.

After receiving a short feed from Sam Carroll, Ward unleashed a powerful shot past the Huntingdon keeper and into the back of the net again.

With the momentum squarely on their side, the Avenging Angels continued to pour it on, this time from Claire Wagner, who converted her first of the season to put an exclamation mark on the win.

With one win under their belt, the Avenging Angels will look to make it a perfect weekend, taking on host school Piedmont on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- Ward's first goal of the game, coming in the 59th minute, proved to be all Meredith needed in the team's first shutout of the season.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Ward delivered the first multi-goal game of the season by an Avenging Angel.
- Carroll assisted Ward's second goal and now leads the team with two assists on the season.
- Delaney Thompson delivered her first career shutout, making six saves in what was her first career win in goal as well.
- Wagner scored her third career goal and first of the season, effectively putting the game away to make it 3-0 late in favor of the Avenging Angels.

NEWS AND NOTES:
- After a pair of draws in the team's first three contests, Barroqueiro picked up his first win as head coach at Meredith.
