RALEIGH, N.C. - Meredith soccer played its second 1-1 draw of its opening week as it battled Bob Jones even on a beautiful Saturday evening in Raleigh.
The Avenging Angels played cleanly in the first half, setting up numerous chances before
Sam Carroll found
Isabel Bitner on a pass to give them a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. However, Bob Jones answered in the 39th minute to even the score, and that's where things remained the rest of the way.
Meredith held a 19-7 edge in total shots, while holding an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.
The beginning of the contest saw the Avenging Angels come out with aggression, culminating in Bitner's first career goal, which came off freshman
Sam Carroll's first career assist.
Minutes later, with the momentum squarely on their side, the Avenging Angels drew a penalty. However, the Bob Jones goalkeeper was up to the task, with a diving save to keep the Meredith lead at just 1-0.
Then, in the 39th minute, the Bruins converted off a corner kick, with Lydia Howell converting from just in front of the net.
With both teams having played a game on Friday, the second half was more of a defensive battle, and the minutes ticked away with both sides locking in.
Freshman goalkeeper
Delaney Thompson came away with a pair of key second half saves to keep the game tied.
Up next, the Avenging Angels are off next week, but will return to action for a trip to Georgia where they will battle Huntingdon on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. and then Piedmont on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.
