Volleyball Shows Grit in Two Losses

Winchester, Va. – The Meredith volleyball team traveled to Shenandoah University to take on the host Hornets and Greensboro College on Saturday in USA South Conference action.  Shenandoah took the first match 3-0 and Greensboro the second match 3-2 in five sets.

Shenandoah 3, Meredith 0 - The first set went to Shenandoah with a 25-17 victory that held the lead since a 4-4 tie.  Meredith held a 20-12 advantage in the second before Shenandoah got hot and won the set 28-26.  The third set saw the Avenging Angels lead by as many as five but fell 25-22 to give Shenandoah the match.  Cori Spade paced the offensive for Meredith with 10 kills and seven digs.  Rebecca Yow put down nine kills and Molly Markley with eight.  MaryBeth Finegan led in digs for Meredith with 16 and Clarke Glendenning had 17 assists. 

Greensboro 3, Meredith 2 – Meredith's second match of the day saw them face second place Greensboro College.  The Pride took the match in five sets 25-11, 18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 15-5.  The Avenging Angels played Greensboro tough in the game with inspired play and extra effort to push it to the fifth set. 

Meredith held an early four point lead in the second set and stretched it out to a seven point victory 25-18 to tie the match at one all.  The Avenging Angels out blocked Greensboro 4-0 and had five service aces in the second set. The third set saw Meredith play a gritty match and get it within one point at 20-19 before the Pride went on a run to take the set.   The Avenging Angels then went on to even the match up in the fourth by thrashing the Pride by nine points and commanding the entire game.   Greensboro started the fifth set with seven straight points and it was too much for Meredith to overcome as the Pride won 15-5.

The Avenging Angels were again led in kills by Spade (14) and Markley (13).  Finegan led the Meredith in digs with 18.  Glendenning had 24 sets while Kara Baughman also had 17 for Meredith.   The Avenging Angels out blocked Greensboro 9-1.

With the completion of play this weekend, Meredith (14-17, 7-11) finishes their regular season in seventh place and face #10 Mary Baldwin at Greensboro College on Tuesday at 5 p.m.  The winner will face the host #3 seeded Pride at 7 p.m.
