Hot Streak Continues for Volleyball; Glendenning Surpasses 1500 Assists

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith Volleyball club continues to impress as the team secured their 13th consecutive win this season with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-12, 24-26, 25-20) victory over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan. The coaching staff recognized seniors Clarke Glendenning, Anna Hayes and Molly Markley just prior to the game.

Rookie outside hitter Karlie Long led the game with 18 kills and 12 digs as she posted her 10th career double-double. Sidelined by an injury since early September, Emily Hendricks rejoined the lineup tonight with a dozen kills and four digs.

Meredith opened the match a bit out of sync and finally took their first lead of the night at 13-12 on a blast from Long.

Long rotated back for the serve and led her team on a 13-0 run to match-point. Wesleyan scored a trio of points before Katelyn Rall and Hayes connected for a kill to end the set.

Meredith maintained control of set two and managed a 25-12 win thanks in part to the defensive efforts of libero Emery McGee. McGee notched nine digs in the set on her way to a game-high 18.

With a 2-0 match advantage the Avenging Angels sat back on their heels and allowed the Bishops the opportunity to get back in the mix.

Wesleyan jumped out to an 8-2 run before passing the ball back to the Avenging Angels on a service error. Markley and Hayes combined for a stuff and Glendenning launched a service ace as the seniors helped Meredith rally back in the lead.

Jasmine Aguinaldo capped off the 11-4 run with a pair of kills assisted by Hayes. But three consecutive MC missteps gave the ball back to N.C. Wesleyan. Bishop Taylor Johnson served her team back to a one-point lead at 19-18.

Markley and Hayes paired up again and Meredith tallied five points to earn the set's first match point at 24-20.

The Avenging Angel offense began to break down with an error on the next ball, and the Bishops cruised past Meredith to claim a 26-24 set three lead.

Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley gathered her team during the three minute intermission and challenged the Avenging Angels to keep their winning streak alive.

The squad regrouped and cut the offensive errors by more than half to push their way to a 25-20 set-four win for the match.

Markley posted seven kills, three blocks, and senior setter Glendenning surpassed 1500 career sets with 21 on the night. Hayes tallied 22 assists an added seven kills from the right side.

Johnson led the Bishops with 10 kills, and libero Christina Huber tallied 17 digs.

Meredith travels South to Methodist University on Saturday, October 26, for a USA South play day versus Covenant and Maryville (Tenn.) The MC Scots remain undefeated in league play and lead the Southern division.

Next week's matchup at cross-town rival William Peace University requires a ticket for entry into the Hermann Student Center. Meredith athletics will host a Ticket Bonanza! Monday, October 28, to distribute a limited number of seats to Avenging Angels.

Meredith's Anna Wiggins will broadcast the game live on the Meredith Sports Network, and fans can also follow the game via live stats.
