#16 Captains Finish Off Meredith 21-3

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The 16th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains (10-1, 5-0 USA South) claimed an easy 21-3 victory over Meredith (4-8, 3-4 USA South) in today's USA South Conference women's lacrosse pairing. CNU's defense allowed just eight shots from the Avenging Angels en route to the win.

Meredith controlled the opening draw, but the Captains forced a quick turnover leading to a goal in the first minute of play.

Rookie standout Katie Burnet tied the game at 27:23 on a free position score before the seasoned CNU squad cruised past the Avenging Angels on a 12-0 run.

Burnet reached the net once more with just 59 seconds remaining in the half, and teammate Danielle Lee netted an unassisted goal in the second period to complete the Meredith scoring.

In spite of the scoring deficit suffered by the Avenging Angels, MC lax controlled 11-28 draws and posted 11 ground balls on the day.

Burnet led Meredith with a pair of goals, three draw controls and five ground balls. Lee earned a game-high five draws and tallied a leading eight ground balls in the loss.

CNU's Jessica Stringer led all with five goals in just seven attempts.

The Avenging Angels host Newberry April 1 at the Meredith Turf Field before closing out the regular season in Fayetteville versus conference foe Methodist Wednesday, April 3.
