Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team posted a 2-0 record in Saturday's USA South play day with a 3-0 win over Huntingdon College (25-7, 25-12, 25-20), followed by a second sweep over the LaGrange Panthers (25-12, 25-15, 25-18). The Angels remain in clear control of the conference North division standings. Karlie Long tallied 20 kills on the day to lead the Meredith offense.
Meredith opened the day with a pair of quick set wins over the Hawks to take a 2-0 match lead. Set one was no contest as the Angels hit .500 to Huntingdon's negative percentage.
After allowing just seven points in the first frame, Meredith maintained the pressure to take an 8-3 lead early in the second. Katie Keen issued an assist to Sarah Brandon in the next exchange, and the Hawks committed four errors in the next five plays to extend the MCVB advantage.
Huntingdon put together a 4-1 run before the Angels turned up the heat again.
Long knocked down back-to-back kills at the hand of setter Hannah Blaylock, and Blaylock served up an ace to help Meredith to seven consecutive winners for a 22-8 advantage.
The Hawks picked up three more points, but Meredith's Long, Anna Huff and Elizabeth Pattison posted a trio of winners to finish off the set.
The teams played more evenly in the third frame, and Huntingdon reset the score at four thanks to a missed serve from the hosts.
Emily Hendricks knocked down a kill with an assist from Keen, and Keegan Lynch served up an ace on the next ball to spread the gap by two in favor of the Angels.
MCVB enjoyed a series of miscues from the Hawks and Long landed a kill to give Meredith a five point lead at 11-6. But Huntingdon battled back to tie the set at 11 before a hitting error gave the serve to Jessica Goodwin.
Katelyn Rall landed a kill and paired up with April Hausler to stuff the next attack. HC picked up the next point, and Hendricks returned the ball to Meredith on a kill of her own.
The Hawks wiped away a five-point Meredith lead on a 6-1 run leaving the Angels holding on 19-18.
Huff found a gap in the Huntingdon defense, and an HC error gave Meredith more breathing room with an unforced error followed by a timeout.
Brandon and Keen paired up for another winner, and Long put down two from the outside as the Avenging Angels finished off the set and match.
Meredith capped off the USA South action with a sweep over LaGrange. The Panthers put up a fight, but the Angels played slow and steady to put away the southern division team in three sets.
Pattison led all with a dozen kills versus LaGrange. Blaylock dished out a combined 47 assists and libero Emery McGee led both matches with double-digit digs totalling 24 on the day. Huff notched six kills versus the Hawks and as many blocks in the win over LaGrange. Hendricks recorded 10 kills and 11 digs on the day.
In other action during the conference play day, LaGrange College wore down the Methodist Monarchs in a five-set dual (7-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11), and MU defeated Huntingdon 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22).
Meredith travels to Averett Wednesday for a USA South North division battle at 7 p.m. The Avenging Angels lead the North heading into the final three weeks of the regular season.
