Volleyball Sweeps Wesleyan 3-0

Box Score

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball squad took care of N.C. Wesleyan 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-21) in Wednesday evening's USA South action. Karlie Long landed nearly half of Meredith's total kills to lead the Avenging Angels to victory.

Meredith opened up the night with an 8-3 lead and extended the advantage to six on a pair of Hannah Blaylock service aces.

The Bishops landed three winners to shift the momentum to the other side of the net, but back-to-back missteps opened the door again for Meredith.

The Wesleyan coaching staff called for a break in the action, but the Angels scored six of the next nine points to lead 23-14. Meredith held on for the set win in spite of a late 7-1 run by the Bishops.

The Avenging Angels carried the momentum into the second frame and cruised to a 7-2 lead on a series of offensive winners.

NCW fought back to within one at 12-11, but Alex Hafliger followed a Meredith timeout with a kill in the middle to end the run. Both teams battled and the Bishops eventually tied the frame at 22.

Elizabeth Pattison landed a kill and Hafliger finished off the set with a solo block and a kill to give Meredith a two set advantage.

The third and final frame followed much the same pattern with Meredith holding a five-point lead at 13-8. Wesleyan battled to even the score at 16, but a block from Long and Jasmine Aguinaldo led the Angels back to a 22-18 lead.

Three offensive errors forced the Avenging Angels to turn up the heat, and Pattison and Emily Hendricks each landed a blow. Jessica Goodwin put the match to rest on a service winner to complete the win.

Long led the match with 21 kills and 15 digs, and Hafliger tallied seven kills to go along with five blocks. Blaylock dished out a match-high 42 assists with three service aces and eight digs.

With just five regular season matches remaining, Meredith travels to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, Saturday to face off with the South division leaders. The Angels challenge Covenant at 10 a.m. and follow with the Maryville Scots at 2 p.m. Link HERE to follow the action live.
