Long, Blaylock Set Volleyball Records; MCVB #1 North Seed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. - Saturday's two wins for the Meredith College volleyball team secured the USA South North division title for the Avenging Angels and the top seed in the conference tournament. Dynamic duo Karlie Long and Hannah Blaylock set new school records today with 446 kills and 983 assists in a single season, respectively.

As the #1 seed in the North, Meredith will face cross-town rival William Peace University next Friday in the 5 p.m. quarterfinal match of the conference tournament. Link HERE for the complete tournament seeding.

The Angels defeated Greensboro College 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19) and Mary Baldwin 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 25-6, 25-17) in today's final regular season action. Methodist swept both teams during the conference play day.

Meredith opened the day versus the Pride. In a battle with 10 resets on the scoreboard, the Angels slipped past Greensboro to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Avenging Angels found their rhythm in the second frame and led 16-6 after scoring six straight points on a service run from Jasmine Aguinaldo. MCVB cruised ahead to finish of the second set by 12.

Meredith's steady offense pushed the Angels out front 21-13 in the third frame, but GC battled back on a 6-1 run to pull to within three at 22-19. Alex Hafliger and Tyler Bryan stuffed a Pride attack to push to match-point, and Hafliger landed a winner to help the Angels finish off the sweep.

In the nightcap Mary Baldwin led by as many as nine at 19-10 before Meredith battled back to within two on a pair of offensive sets. But the Fighting Squirrels took a 1-0 match lead on kill from Katelyn Rice.

MBC maintained the momentum early in the second with the score reset at eights. But a 7-1 Meredith run gave the Angels some breathing room on their way to a 10-point victory to tie the match.

Meredith held Mary Baldwin to just six points in the third frame before finishing off the Squirrels in four.

Long recorded a pair of double-doubles with a combined 34 kills, 20 digs, and Blaylock led both matches with 35 assists versus the Pride and 31 in the win over Baldwin. Blaylock added six service aces on the day.

Next weekend's USA South Tournament action begins at 1 p.m. with the first quarterfinal pairing. All tournament matches will be held in Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College in Martinsville, Virginia. The semifinals begin at Noon Saturday with the Championship match slated for a 6 p.m. start later that day.
