Marlins Hand MC Lax Their First Loss, 12-10

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College lacrosse team suffered a disappointing 12-10 loss to the visiting Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night. Rookie Molly Miller led the scoring with a game-high six goals.

The Avenging Angels held a 3-1 lead in the first eight minutes of the game on a pair of goals from Miller and another from Katie Burnet.

But the Marlins scored four consecutive points, including two on free position attempts, to take a 5-3 lead with 6:25 left in the half.

Miller netted a solo shot two and one half minutes later to pull Meredith to within one.  In the final seconds of the period, she paired with Burnet to score again sending the teams into the locker room tied at 5-5.

Burnet scored two quick goals after the break, with one assisted by freshman Victoria Doyle, to give Meredith an edge.

The teams exchanged points during the next 14 minutes of play leaving the Avenging Angels with a two-point advantage.

With just ten minutes remaining in regulation, Wesleyan's Candace Carey netted an unassisted goal with Meredith's Doyle in the penalty box. The Marlins shut down the Avenging Angels' offense and scored three more to secure the win.

Burnet added three goals to Miller's six and tallied a pair of assists and four draw controls. Doyle and Jennifer Halvorson recorded two assists apiece, and Danielle Lee notched her third goal of the season. Meghan Brooks tallied eight saves in her first loss.

Carey and Brooke Cabeceiras led the Marlins with a combined seven goals in the win. Madison Carroll recorded nine saves in her first win on the season.

The Avenging Angels open conference play this weekend beginning with LaGrange Saturday at 11 a.m. Meredith earned the program's first-ever win versus the Panthers during the 2013 season. From Georgia the team travels to Montgomery, Alabama, to face USA South newcomer Huntingdon College in a 12 p.m. (CST) start.
