LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Meredith tennis team earned the first USA South Conference match of the 2014 campaign with a 9-0 sweep over LaGrange Saturday afternoon. The Avenging Angels then fell to the nationally-ranked Emory Eagles.
Meredith started the day with an automatic 2-0 lead versus the Panthers. Avenging Angel Caroline Hunt rotated up to the No. 1 singles spot and dropped just one game in the match.
Freshman Cailin Goff and returner Taylor Brennan swept their competion at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
Senior Puja Patel rejoined the lineup with Hunt at No. 1 doubles and posted an 8-0 sweep along with Mary Lawrence Newton/Brennan for the league win.
Meredith traveled to Decatur later in the afternoon to face #2 Emory at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
Patel/Hunt took three games at No. 1 doubles, and Newton/Brennan picked up a pair of games as Meredith opened the match with a 3-0 deficit.
Hunt fought to win four games in her No. 2 singles play, and Goff detered a potential sweep at No. 4 with a win in her opening set.
The Avenging Angels travel to Huntingdon College Sunday for a 1 p.m. (CST) start to cap off the weekend conference doubleheader.
