Lacrosse Caps Off Opening Week with 13-8 Win Over Huntingdon

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Meredith College lacrosse team defeated USA South newcomer Huntingdon College 13-8 Sunday to sweep the weekend's league doubleheader. Katie Burnet led all with six goals in the win.

After a seven minute defensive battle, the Hawks opened the scoring on a free position goal from Candace Williams.

Burnet scored less than a minute later after a Huntingdon misstep, and Danielle Lee followed next to give Meredith a 2-1 lead with 21:20 remaining in the period.

The hosts scored four more points during the period but would not keep pace with the Avenging Angels, who cruised ahead for an 8-5 halftime lead.

The teams exchanged goals during the first eight minutes of the second half, when Meredith netted three consecutive goals to surge ahead toward the win.

Along with Burnet's six points, Lee tallied three goals. Rookie's Victoria Doyle and Jennifer Halvorson posted a combined five assists, and Meghan Brooks earned four saves in her third career win in goal.

Led by Williams with three total points, three Huntindgon Hawks posted two goals apiece. Goalie Alexis McDonald notched 15 saves in her third loss on the season.

The Avenging Angels travel to N.C. Wesleyan Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match and host Converse next Friday to open a five game series during spring break.
