Box Score 2 STAUNTON, Va. - The Meredith College volleyball Angels captured a pair of 3-0 wins during Saturday's USA South play day. Meredith swept The Greensboro Pride (25-18, 25-17, 25-12) first before capping off the day with a win over the host Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels (25-13, 25-10, 25-14).
The day leaves the Avenging Angels in a three-way tie for control of North division standings with Averett and Methodist.
Meredith opened the day hitting 14-of-24 for a blistering .542 hitting percentage in the first set with The Pride and closed out the win hitting .458 in the third stanza.
Karlie Long and Emery McGee combined for 27 digs to lead the defensive efforts to hold back Greensboro's attack. Jasmine Aguinaldo recorded a trio of solo blocks and Emily Hendricks tallied two to seal off the net.
Long led all with 14 kills, 15 digs, and Elizabeth Pattison recorded 11 kills in just 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage in the win.
With a little less precision Meredith finished off the day with a sweep over MBC. Head Coach Fiona Barkley cleared her bench during the match as 15-of-18 players entered the game.
Katelyn Rall led the Avenging Angels with seven kills, and rookie's Alex Hafliger and Tyler Bryan combined for nine to secure Meredith's fifth league win.
McGee posted seven digs, and Jessica Goodwin grabbed five to go along with five service aces from Katie Keen. Setter Hannah Blaylock tallied 37 assists and seven service aces on the day.
Meredith hosts Roanoke College Tuesday evening in the final non-conference action of the season before heading across town Thursday to face rivals William Peace.
Note: Entry into the WPU match requires a ticket. Meredith's ticket allotment will be available on a first-come-first-served basis for Avenging Angel students, faculty and staff Wednesday morning.
