Long's 19 Kills Wear Down Roanoke for a 3-0 Meredith Win

Box Score

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team did not disappoint the attentive crowd as the Avenging Angels finished off the visiting Roanoke Maroons 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-20) in Tuesday's non-conference match. Karlie Long led all with a blistering 19 kills, and Jasmine Aguinaldo stuffed five to push Meredith past Roanoke.

The Maroons opened the first set with a 3-2 lead when Elizabeth Pattison landed her first kill. Aguinaldo then opened up her block to stuff the next three Roanoke attacks, two with help from Emily Hendricks, to push the Angels quickly ahead 6-3.

The teams exchanged the next few points when Meredith allowed the Maroons to take an 11-9 lead on a series of unforced errors at the net.

Long unleashed back-to-back blows and picked up teammate Anna Huff to even the score at 12s. Huff added her on stuff on the next play to edge MC ahead.

The teams tied the score on five more occasions before the Avenging Angels finished off Roanoke on a 6-0 run.

The battle continued in set two as Long and setter Hannah Blaylock paired up for another winner to open the scoring.

Meredith gave the ball back on a service error to tie the score for the first-of-eight times until Roanoke hit a trio of kills to create a gap.

Blaylock assisted Long on the next kill and capped off a 5-0 Meredith run in the same manner to put the Angels back in the lead by two at 15-13.

Roanoke capitalized on a Meredith error with a service ace and a kill before libero Emery McGee took care of the next MCVB point to end the run and even the score at 16s.

A back-and-forth match continued with neither team ahead by more than two points until Hendricks ignited a four-point series for a three-point advantage.

The Maroons would not back down and tied the game once again at 25-25. But Long crushed the next ball, and Aguinaldo finished off the win with a service ace for a 2-0 match lead.

Roanoke finally began to show signs of defeat heading into the third stanza. Meredith took an early 9-3 lead, but the Maroons remained in the mix on a block and pair of service aces.

The visitors extended their lead to four before Long crushed back-to-back blows to push Meredith back to a 15-9 advantage. A Roanoke timeout settled the Maroons who crept back to within three before MC reclaimed the serve.

Roanoke would climb back to within two before the Avenging Angels finally put the match away on a trio of winners.

Hendricks tallied 10 kills in 22 attempts, adding three blocks, and Pattison notched five winners from the right side. Blaylock dished out 30 assists, and McGee gathered 11 digs to help Meredith record the win.

The Avenging Angels travel across town Thursday evening for a USA South matchup with rival William Peace University. Pregame ceremonies begin at 7 p.m.

Note: Entry into the WPU match requires a ticket. Meredith's ticket allotment will be available on a first-come-first-served basis for Avenging Angel students, faculty and staff Wednesday morning. Doors to the gym open at 6 p.m game night.
