Box Score

FERRUM, Va. - The host Ferrum College Panthers (12-9, 6-5 USA South) upset the USA South Conference North division's leader Meredith College (14-7, 9-2) in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25) pairing Tuesday evening. Karlie Long, Alex Hafliger, and Emily Hendricks led the Avenging Angels with double-digit kills in the loss.

The Panthers opened the match strong and cruised to a 11-4 lead in the opening set. Meredith pulled to within four with help from a Long kill and a stuff from Hafliger and Elizabeth Pattison, but Ferrum's Cheyenne Strickland landed a pair of winners to keep the hosts out front.

Meredith scored 9 of the next 14 points to pull to within two at 21-19, but the Panthers finished out the set on a pair of kills from Jessica Turner to take a match lead.

The Angels recovered to win the second set on kills from Hafliger and Long.

Late in the third set, Meredith trailed by just one point. But the Angels posted a trio of unforced errors to hand over the set to Ferrum for a 2-1 advantage.

The fourth and final set remained close until Strickland dished out a pair of assists to Lateashia Clarke for the win.

Long led the match with 17 kills, adding nine digs, and Hafliger posted 11 kills, six blocks. Hendricks tallied 10 kills, while Hannah Blaylock dished out 27 assists with 11 digs in the loss.

Hannah Helbert and Turner combined for 21 kills to lead Ferrum, and four Panthers finished with double-digit digs to edge the division leader.

Meredith hosts the Roanoke Maroons in a non-conference pairing Thursday evening. Just prior to the 7 p.m. match, Athletics Director Jackie Myers will unveil four championship banners from the 2014-2015 year to honor the Avenging Angels.

USA South Commissioner Rita Wiggs will be on campus Wednesday evening to present the 2015 Women's President's Cup to the college just prior to a 6 p.m. home soccer match versus the Methodist Monarchs.
