Box Score RALEIGH, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball Angels swept the visiting Roanoke Maroons 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17) in non-conference action Thursday evening. Karlie Long led the match with 14 kills as MCVB outhit Roanoke with .307 hitting on the night.
Just prior to the match, the Avenging Angels unveiled four championship banners earned during the 2014-2015 year. The USA South Women's Soccer Regular Season Co-Championship, volleyball's North Division title, and cross country's second consecutive Conference Championship contributed to the final point total awarding Meredith the 2015 USA South Women's President's Cup.
Athletic Director Jackie Myers recognized the coaches and student-athletes of each of these teams, as well as the 2015 Women's Lacrosse Tournament Champion Avenging Angels. Vice President for College Programs Jean Jackson was on-hand to unveil each banner during the presentation.
As play resumed, the Avenging Angels handled Roanoke with ease during the first set. The Maroons responded early in the second frame to hold a 6-4 advantage, but kills from Alex Hafliger and Emily Hendricks set MCVB on a 5-1 rally to retake the lead 9-7.
Roanoke tied the score on a pair of missteps by the Angels, but Long and setter Hannah Blaylock put together back-to-back points to launch a 7-1 run. Meredith continued the pressure to finish out the set for a 2-0 match lead.
The Avenging Angels struggled to find a rhythm during the third set until a Hafliger stuff pulled her team out of the slump. Hendricks landed a pair of winners, and Jessica Goodwin subbed in for a service ace as MCVB pushed past the Maroons for the sweep.
Hendricks tallied six kills, and Elizabeth Pattison and Jasmine Aguinaldo combined for 10. Hafliger led all with four blocks, adding three kills from the middle, and Blaylock dished out a match-high 29 assists.
The Avenging Angels return to USA South action Sunday as they travel to LaGrange College for a conference play day with Huntingdon.
