Box Score 2 LAGRANGE, Ga. - The Meredith College volleyball team recorded a pair of victories during Sunday's USA South play day at LaGrange College. The Avenging Angels swept the host Panthers 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 26-24) before downing the Huntingdon Hawks 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21).
Karlie Long led MCVB with 31 kills, adding three service aces and 15 digs. Alex Hafliger controlled the blocking efforts in both matches with 12 on the day, and Elizabeth Pattison supported the defense with seven blocks, adding 15 kills.
During the first match of the day, Meredith scored 10 consecutive points to recover from a 10-4 LaGrange lead to win set one. The Angels maintained the momentum throughout the second frame to extend their advantage to two sets.
While the third frame remained close, the Panthers led the set throughout. With a two point LaGrange advantage at 22-20, Jasmine Aguinaldo and Emily Hendricks landed a pair of kills to tie the game.
LaGrange edged back in front, but Hannah Blaylock dished out another assist to Aguinaldo to tie the set at 23. Play followed the same trend during the next two points leaving the set tied at 24 on a Hafliger kill, and Hendricks followed a LaGrange misstep to give Meredith a two-point conversion for the sweep.
After a lunch break the Angels returned to the court to face off with Huntingdon. The Hawks opened fire against MCVB and tallied just two hitting errors en route to a set one victory.
But the Angels recovered to take a 6-2 lead early in the second stanza. The Hawks battled as Meredith held a 14-11 lead midway through the set. But the Angels unleashed a 9-3 rally to extend their advantage and capped off the frame with five consecutive points for the win.
Meredith led by as many as eight much of the way through the third to cruise to a 2-1 match advantage. The Hawks held on in the fourth set until a 7-1 series spread the gap for the Angels, and Huntingdon would not recover.
Blaylock led both matches with 36 assists versus LaGrange 35 versus the Hawks. She combined for 16 digs, adding four service aces. Emery McGee notched 22 digs on the day.
Meredith returns to Weatherspoon Wednesday evening playing host to the N.C. Wesleyan Battling Bishops. The USA South action begins at 7 p.m.
