Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- In Friday's USA South Conference Volleyball Tournament quarterfinals, the North's second-seeded Meredith College volleyball team advanced on a 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12) win over the South's third-seeded Piedmont Lions. Outside hitters Karlie Long and Emily Hendricks combined for 33 of Meredith's kills to lead the offense in the win.
The Avenging Angels edged Piedmont on back-to-back winners from Long in set one and took a 2-0 match lead in the second frame on a kill from Hendricks followed by a miscue from the Lions.
But Meredith stumbled in the the next two frames to allow Piedmont to tie the match 2-2.
The fifth stanza opened with even play from both sides of the net before the Angels scored four consecutive points capped off by back-to-back winners from Hendricks to lead 8-4. Meredith continued to pressure the Lions and extended the advantage to six on a kill from Alex Hafliger.
Piedmont remained close, but the Angels finished off the Lions to advance to the next round.
Hafliger contributed 12.5 points on 10 kills and four blocks, and Hannah Blaylock distributed 49 assists with 13 digs for a double-double. Libero Emery McGee led Meredith with 17 digs, and Keegan Lynch followed with 14. Elizabeth Pattison recorded nine kills with a pair of blocks, and Jasmine Aguinaldo led all with four service aces, adding three kills from the middle.
Piedmont's Taylor Cramsey led the Lions with 16 kills, and Haley Hixon tallied 22 digs in the loss.
The Avenging Angels will face the winner of the fourth quarterfinal pairing between the South's top-seeded Covenant Scots and the North's fifth-seeded Ferrum. The semifinal round is slated for a 2 p.m. start following the Noon semifinal featuring Maryville and Averett.
