Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Meredith College lacrosse team survived a 4-0 Greensboro College run in the final 5:15 of Friday's second USA South Tournament semifinal match to defeat the pride 20-19.
The Avenging Angels will defend their 2014 conference title Saturday at 1 p.m. as they face top-seeded Piedmont at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex Stadium. The Lions held off a late game rally from the fourth seeded Ferrum Panthers to advance.
Meredith took an early 6-2 lead before the Pride evened the score at eight with 5:29 remaining in the half, but the Angels scored three of the next four to head into the break up by a pair.
After the break Meredith found the net on three occasions in the first five minutes of play to spread the gap to five.
Greensboro responded as Nicole Ritchey scored two in a 4-1 Pride rally over the next 6:34, but MC's Victoria Doyle scored back-to-back goals to extend the Meredith advantage back to 19-15 with 7:12 remaining in regulation.
Meredith goalie Meghan Brooks saved a free position attempt from USA South Player of the Year Kristin Norris to prevent the go-ahead point by the Pride with 1:21 left on the clock. The Avenging Angels drove down field as Carlee Joseph netted a pass from Alison Reisert with 15 seconds remaining to secure the win for good.
Doyle led Meredith with six goals, and Joseph tallied six points as well on five goals, one assist. Danielle Lee collected an impressive 12 draw controls to go along with three goals and one assist. Brooks posted her 11th win on the season notching two saves on the day.
The second-seeded Angels return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. to challenge top-seeded Piedmont for the USA South Championship title.
