Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - In a 10-7 victory over the top-seeded Piedmont Lions, the second-seeded Meredith College lacrosse team claimed their second consecutive USA South title. The Avenging Angels advance to the NCAA tournament for the second time in the program's young three-year history. Senior midfielder Danielle Lee was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Down 5-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the first period, Lee and Carlee Joseph each scored a goal to give the Avenging Angels a one point lead at the half. Both teams scored one goal apiece to open the second stanza before Meredith notched three in-a-row to give the Angels breathing room heading into the final minutes of regulation.
The Lions scored at 4:11 to cut the Piedmont deficit to three, and PC controlled the next draw. But Meghan Brooks deflected a final shot attempt and battled for the groundball to return possession to the Avenging Angels for good.
Joseph led all with a game-high four goals, and Lee tallied two goals with one assist to go along with three groundballs and as many draw controls. Jennifer Halvorson recorded a pair of goals and one assist, and Victoria Doyle and Lottie Meadows added one apiece in the win. Brooks tallied seven saves to collect her 12th win in the cage this season.
Piedmont's Maggie McDaniel dished out a pair of assists and led a trio of Lions scoring two goals apiece. Blake Forrest earned her second loss on the season with three saves in goal.
Meredith's championship win comes with a ticket to the 2015 NCAA tournament set to begin in early May. Stay tuned for details.
