Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball team downed the Salem Spirits on the road Tuesday evening. Karlie Long recorded a double-double with 11 kills and as many digs to lead MCVB to the win.
The Avenging Angels averaged a .412 hitting percentage in the first set to take a 1-0 match lead and maintained the advantage throughout the night. Alex Hafliger was nearly flawless from the middle with just one error, and defenders Emery McGee and Jessica Goodwin recorded double-digit digs to hold off the Spirits.
Meredith held an 8-6 lead early in set two when a Long winner gave the serve to Jasmine Aguinaldo for four more points to extend the Angel advantage to seven. Salem's leading attacker Kylie Taffer slipped one past the Meredith defense to end the run, but Hannah Blaylock continued to feed the front line to claim the 25-16 set-two victory.
Salem led the third frame 4-0 before Meredith scored six consecutive points for a 6-4 advantage. Three unanswered points followed by an unforced Angel error pushed the Spirits back in front 10-8, but Aguinaldo and Haley Reeg paired up for a stuff to interrupt the effort. A pair of service aces from Goodwin, along with winners from Aguinaldo and Tyler Bryan, gave the momentum back to Meredith, and Blaylock stuffed Salem to cap off the six-run series.
The Spirits battled back for a 20-19 lead, but a pair of late winners from Aguinaldo edged the Avenging Angels back in front for good.
Aguinaldo finished with nine kills, three blocks, and Blaylock dished out 37 assists.
The Avenging Angels open the USA South slate Thursday evening in Fayetteville versus the Methodist Monarchs. Follow the action live HERE.
