Volleyball's 63 Kills Drive Angels to 3-1 Victory Over Wesleyan

Box Score

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - In Tuesday's USA South event, the Meredith College volleyball squad downed N.C. Wesleyan 3-1 (25-10, 25-17, 30-28, 26-24) with 63 total kills, including 19 winners from Karlie Long. The defense held the Bishops to just 44 on the night to give MCVB the win.

With her two block assists, Jasmine Agiunaldo set a new all-time Meredith record with 207 career BAs. She holds the second-best record behind Molly Markley, '14, with 280 total career blocks.

The Avenging Angels outplayed the host Battling Bishops during the first set with a .353 hitting percentage and Wesleyan in the red. Setters Hannah Blaylock with 37 assists and Katie Keen with 12 continued to place the ball for their teamates, and Meredith used the advantage to finish off NCW in four.

Set two went much like the first frame as Wesleyan finished with nine errors in just 29 attempts to give Meredith a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set N.C. Wesleyan evened the score 7-7 when Elizabeth Pattison crushed one from the right side to put Meredith back in front. Jessica Goodwin stepped up and served back-to-back service aces to keep the run going, and Keen dished out another set, this time to Emily Hendricks, for the winner. Keen put one down on the next point to push the Angels ahead 12-7.

Wesleyan had other plans as the Bishops pulled back to within one with a pair of blocks from Taylor Smith. Hendricks ended the run, and the teams traded points during the next series. Meredith spread the gap to 24-17 when NCW came alive.

The Bishops scored seven of the next eight points to force Head Meredith Coach Fiona Barkley to call for a timeout. Long and Keen paired up for a point on the next play, but Wesleyan slipped past the Angels to extend the match.

Meredith jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Bisops battled back to within one at 16-15. N.C. Wesleyan remained close but would never lead the set as the Angels held on to their perfect 4-0 USA South record with a win.

Aguinaldo posted 10 kills, and Alex Hafliger combined with Hendricks for 17 on the night. Emery McGee led the defense with 20 digs, and Long tallied 13. Keegan Lynch notched a dozen to go along with a trio of service aces, and Goodwin finished with eight digs in the win.

The Avenging Angels remain on the road this weekend with a USA South play day at Averett University. Meredith starts with Ferrum at Noon Saturday and caps off the day with the Cougars at 4 p.m. Follow the action live HERE.
