Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball Angels handled the Maryville Scots in straight sets (28-26, 25-15, 25-21) before finishing off Salem College 3-1 in Saturday's USA South play day. Junior Hannah Blaylock set a new all-time Meredith volleyball record with 2493 career assists, set back in 2008 by Laura Sayabouth.

Blaylock dished out 78 assists today to make history.

Meredith opened Saturday's action with a thrilling 28-26 set one victory over the MC Scots. With a 15-11 advantage the Angels gave three quick points back to the Scots, and Maryville forced three more for a 6-0 rally to take the lead 17-15.

The teams continued to battle with neither team willing to quit. Meredith finally evened the score at 23 on back-to-back kills from Alex Hafliger, and Karlie Long landed two more winners to keep the game close.

Blaylock set up Haley Reeg for the 27th point, and a net violation on Maryville closed out the set in favor of the Angels.

MCVB turned up the heat in the second frame, hitting .423 as a team to extend their advantage to 2-0.

In the third and final set Keegan Lynch served the Angels to a 12-5 advantage, but the Scots pulled back to within two to steadily ease back into the set.

Elizabeth Pattison landed a winner from the right side to give the Avenging Angels match point, and Jessica Goodwin entered the court to serve out the final point. Hafliger and Blaylock stuffed Maryville's final attack to close out the victory.

The Ferrum Panthers upset Maryville in the second match of the day, and then went on to complete the sweep with a victory over Salem.

After a late start for the final pairing between Meredith and Salem, the Avenging Angels came out flat and dropped the first set 25-20 to the Spirits.

MCVB opened the second set in a similar fashion with Salem out front 7-3 early in the action. But Reeg ended the series with a kill from the middle, and then served the Angels to a 8-0 run to for a 12-7 advantage.

Blaylock distributed the ball throughout the Meredith offense, as the Avenging Angels continued to pressure the Spirits on to a 25-17 win to tie the match.

Katie Keen opened the third frame with a service ace, and Meredith continued to attack the visitors from all angles. Long finished off the frame with 1-of-17 kills on the match to give the Angels a 2-1 advantage.

But the Spirits would not back down and opened with a 9-3 advantage in the fourth set.

A Caroline Corey winner returned the ball to the Angels, and Meredith began to chip away at Salem's lead. Down 14-7 Reeg and Corey each scored on the attack and Keen served another ace to move Meredith closer to their opponent.

Salem extended their lead once again to 17-12 before a service misstep gave the ball back to MCVB. Lynch served the Angels on a 6-0 run that would put Meredith back in front 19-17 and force a Salem timeout.

The Spirits returned to the court and exchanged points with Meredith leaving the score even at 21. Long and Blaylock paired up once more and a Salem error edged Meredith back in front by two.

Unable to put away the Spirits, Pattison finally stepped up from the right side to blast a winner down the line, and Salem mishandled the next ball to finally secure the win for MCVB.

Long tallied 25 kills on the day to lead the Angels, and Corey finished with 24. Pattison recorded 18, and middles Hafliger and Reeg combined for 33. Lynch led the defense 31 digs, and McGee followed with 21.

The Avenging Angels return to Weatherspoon Gym Wednesday evening as host to the Methodist Monarchs and will attempt to extend their winning streak. Follow the action live HERE beginning at 7 p.m.
